BoardProfiler 3D-L – Measurements of the true shape of boards in lineal lines

The BoardProfiler 3D-L provides very high density board scanning on conveyors for edging, sorting or classification of lineal saw processes. This high definition scanning ensures that the true shape is accurately captured and means that the best possible yield can be achieved. The system uses the latest high resolution 2D laser technology developed by LIMAB which scans every millimeter of the board. The system can easily be retrofitted on an existing line or can be specified for equipping a new process line.

Operating Principle
The boards are scanned with the LIMAB ProfiCura 2D sensors using a technique known as optical laser triangulation. The sensors are mounted to a mechanical frame and captures a complete cross sections of the board. The scanning process enables the computer to generate a very detailed 3D model of each board.

BoardProfiler 3D-LE/LR – Edger and Rip-saw optimization
The BoardProfiler 3D-LE/LR system fully scans the board in order to provide data for cutting in saw lines from 1 –5 saw blades. The advantage of the system is its high thickness and wane detection accuracy. When defining a cut decision in an optimization, it is important to correctly detect the board thickness and separate wane from cup. A correct and accurate cutting decision will result in yield improvements.

BoardProfiler 3D-LC – Cross-cut saw optimization
The BoardProfiler 3D-LC system optimizes any kind of wood in speeds up to 400 m/min. The geometrical defects of the board, such as thickness, width, wane and shape, will be measured according to your specifications. The system handles up to five separate saw blades.

BoardProfiler 3D-LH – “Hit & Miss”, Thickness & width
The overall dimensions of the finished board are scanned with high scan resolution. This data is used by the BoardProfiler 3D-LH to accurately determine the overall dimension of the boards. With the Hit & Miss module, the BoardProfiler 3D-LH will find small geometrical errors which are not accepted in the process. These defects are evaluated for sorting or classification in for example planer lines or floor production lines.

BoardProfiler 3D-LS – Shape-optimization and classification
The BoardProfiler 3D-LS accurately measures the overall shape of the board and will determine side-bow, twist and flat-bow and then classify according to geometrical rule tables of the saw mill. The system is normally used in classification lines to provide correct geometric deformation to the saw mill management system.

ProfiCura technology
The BoardProfiler 3D-L integrates LIMAB’s ProfiCura 2D laser triangulation sensors which are a product of 30 years’ experience of producing precision laser sensors. The sensors are very accurate and stable, suitable for use in tough sawmill environment.

Non contact measurement
The measurements are done 100% non-contact. This is possible by using the LIMAB laser sensors. This means that the BoardProfiler 3D-L can operate on the fastest conveyors and still provide reliable results. 

Automated inspection
The BoardProfiler 3D-L will accurately determine the shape characteristics of each board and calculate a cutting proposal based on the customers quality grades. Automating the sawing or trimming operation will reduce the manual work and increase the yield. 

Integration with existing sawmill equipment
LIMAB’s long experience in supplying the sawmill industry means that the equipment can be easily be retrofitted to existing lines or fully integrated to new ones. Interfaces are available to most of today’s OEM sawmill equipment suppliers.
